High Road
High Road was created for the A Verb for Keeping Warm Pro-Verbial club, and the name comes from the High Road to Taos, which is a scenic route full of gorgeous scenery, small villages, and artists' studios, winding through the Sangre de Cristo mountains in my adopted state of New Mexico.
Worked in a luxurious merino/silk yarn, High Road grows organically from its center path into three distinct sections. With simple, classic stitch patterns worked into an unusually constructed triangle shawl, High Road strikes the perfect balance between engaging, meditative process and easily wearable finished shawl.
High Road is worked in three parts, and each part is knit in a different direction. The center garter ridge section is worked first by casting on at the upper corner, working from side to side and turning the bottom corner with short rows, and casting off again at the opposite upper corner. The top stockinette section is picked up from the inner edges of the center garter ridge section and worked upwards, decreasing at the edges and center. Finally, the bottom edging is picked up from the outer edge of the center garter ridge section and is worked downwards, softly increasing in a garter and stockinette pattern to form a gentle ruffle.
Selvedge stitches give a smooth, neat edge to the center garter section and making picking up the stitches to work the upper and lower sections a breeze. These slipped stitches form a tidy, decorative ridge on the right side of the shawl.
Materials Needed:
Yarn: 385 yards / 352 meters sport weight yarn; shown in 1 skein A Verb for Keeping Warm Metamorphosis; 385 yds / 352 m per 4.06 oz / 115 g skein; 70% superwash merino, 30% silk, shown in the Filigree colorway (yellow/caramel) and the Pro-Verbial club colorway (terra-cotta).
Needles: US 6 / 4 mm 24” or 32” circular needle (or size needed to obtain gauge)
Notions: tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
Gauge: 18 sts and 29 rows = 4” / 10 cm in stockinette stitch using US 6 / 4 mm needles.
Finished size: 46” / 117 cm wide along top edge and 13” / 33 cm long down center spine.
Skills needed: knit, purl, cast on, bind off, increase, decrease, wrap and turn, slip stitches, and pick up stitches. This pattern is suitable for newer knitters who want to try basic shaping (increases and decreases), short rows, or picking up stitches for the first time.
Please note:
Though gauge is not crucial for this project, please note that changing yarn, needle size, or gauge will result in a different finished size and may affect yardage requirements.
